Colombia Visa Guide for Expats & Foreign Investors

Colombia's visa system has over 20 subcategories across three main types. As your legal representatives, we guide you through the entire process — from eligibility analysis and document preparation through to your Cédula de Extranjería — so you never have to decode Migración Colombia's platform yourself.

Three visa types, dozens of subcategories

Colombia classifies all visas under Type V, M, or R. Each carries different rights, durations, and renewal paths. Choosing the wrong one costs time, money, and sometimes your legal status.

Type V — Visitor

For short-to-medium stays without the intent to settle permanently. Covers digital nomads, temporary investors, students, religious workers, and medical treatment visitors. Valid for up to 2 years depending on subcategory, with no direct path to residency.

Type M — Migrant

For those establishing long-term ties to Colombia. Covers sponsored workers, spouses of Colombian nationals, investors with capital above 100 SMMLV, and refugees. Valid for up to 3 years and serves as the stepping stone to permanent residency.

Type R — Resident

Permanent residency, available after 5 consecutive years on an M visa or 2 years if married to a Colombian national. Grants indefinite stay, work rights, and the ability to be absent from Colombia for up to 2 years without losing status. Also available to retirees with qualifying pensions.

From first call to visa in hand

Six clear steps. We manage every stage and keep you updated at each milestone.

01

Eligibility Assessment

We review your situation, nationality, income, and objectives to identify the correct visa category and flag potential issues before they become problems.

02

Document Preparation

We compile, translate, apostille, and format every document to Migración Colombia's exact specifications. Nothing gets submitted until the package is bulletproof.

03

Application Filing

We submit through the official online portal, handle any requerimientos (additional requests) from the examiner, and track progress in real time.

04

Biometrics & Payment

We coordinate your biometric appointment at the nearest Migración office and manage government fee payments so nothing falls through the cracks.

05

Visa Issued

Once approved, we verify every detail on your electronic visa, ensure the validity dates are correct, and brief you on your visa's specific conditions and obligations.

06

Cédula de Extranjería

For M and R visa holders, we handle your foreign ID registration — the document you need for banking, contracts, property, and everyday life in Colombia.

End-to-end visa support, no loose ends

Our bilingual team manages everything between your first inquiry and your Cédula pickup — including the bureaucratic layers most firms skip.

Most applicants underestimate how particular Migración Colombia is about document formatting. A bank statement in the wrong currency, an apostille from the wrong authority, or a photograph that doesn't meet their pixel specifications can derail an otherwise perfect application. We've provided legal counsel on hundreds of visa matters and know exactly what the examiners look for.

For investors and entrepreneurs, we coordinate with our incorporation team to ensure your visa application and company formation move in parallel. Your S.A.S. registration, NIT, and investment certification can serve as supporting documents for an M visa — but only if they're structured correctly from the start.

We also handle post-approval obligations that catch people off guard: the 15-day window for Cédula registration, visa stamping in your passport if required, notification of address changes to Migración, and renewal timelines to prevent gaps in your legal status. If your visa is nearing expiration and you need a salvoconducto (safe-conduct permit) to bridge the gap, we file it immediately.

Why visa applications get rejected

We see the same mistakes repeatedly. Every one of these is preventable with proper preparation.

Incomplete Documentation

Missing apostilles, expired translations, photographs that don't meet size or background requirements, or bank statements that don't cover the required period. Migración rarely gives second chances — they reject and you start over.

Insufficient Financial Proof

Income must be demonstrated in a specific format, from qualifying sources, covering the correct time period. Crypto income, irregular freelance payments, and multi-currency accounts all require special handling to satisfy examiners.

Incorrect Visa Category

Applying for a digital nomad V visa when you should be on an M investor visa, or vice versa. The wrong category means automatic rejection, wasted fees, and weeks of delay. This is the most expensive mistake we see.

Missed Deadlines

Failing to register your Cédula within 15 days, not responding to a requerimiento in time, or letting your current visa expire before filing a renewal. Each of these can result in fines, deportation orders, or loss of accumulated residency time.

Visa questions, answered clearly

Colombia's digital nomad visa is a Type V visa established under Resolución 5477 of 2022. It allows remote workers earning at least 3 times the Colombian minimum wage (approximately $975 USD/month in 2026) to live and work legally in Colombia for up to 2 years. You must demonstrate income from foreign sources and carry valid health insurance. It does not lead directly to residency, but it gives you legal status while you explore longer-term options.

For the digital nomad V visa, you need to prove monthly income of at least 3 Colombian minimum wages from foreign sources — typically around $975 USD/month. For investor V visas, you need to demonstrate a qualifying investment in Colombia. Income is proven through bank statements, employment contracts, or client invoices covering the most recent 3 to 6 months. We help structure your documentation so examiners can verify your income without ambiguity.

Yes. If you hold a valid M or R visa, your spouse can apply for a beneficiary M visa. If you are married to a Colombian national, you can apply directly for an M visa as a spouse — and transition to an R visa after just 2 years of continuous residence instead of the standard 5 years. You'll need an authenticated marriage certificate, and if it was issued abroad, it must be apostilled and translated.

If your visa application is rejected, Migración Colombia issues a resolution explaining the reasons. You can file a recurso de reposición (appeal) within 10 business days, or submit an entirely new application addressing the deficiencies. Our attorneys review every rejection to determine the best corrective strategy — whether that means appealing the decision or restructuring the application — and handle re-submission on your behalf.

Online applications through Migración Colombia's platform typically receive a response within 5 to 30 business days after submission. Document preparation usually takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on whether apostilles and translations are needed from abroad. Total turnaround from engagement to visa in hand is generally 3 to 6 weeks. Complex cases involving investment certification or inter-country apostilles can take longer, and we set realistic expectations upfront.

No. Most visa applications can be submitted entirely online through the Migración Colombia platform from anywhere in the world. However, once your visa is approved, you must register your Cédula de Extranjería in person at a Migración office within 15 calendar days of entering Colombia (or within 15 days of the visa being issued if you are already in the country). We coordinate the Cédula appointment and accompany you through the registration procedure as your legal counsel.

The Cédula de Extranjería is Colombia's foreign ID card. It is mandatory for anyone holding an M or R visa and serves as your primary legal identification within the country. You need it to open bank accounts, sign leases and contracts, register property, file taxes with the DIAN, access the healthcare system, and conduct virtually any official transaction. You must apply for it within 15 calendar days of your visa being issued, and the process involves an in-person appointment at a Migración Colombia office.
